Anacortes has "Amended" its' Comprehensive  Plan annually.  However, for 2005, the Growth Management Act (GMA) requires Anacortes to "Update" our plan, ensuring compliance with GMA requirements.  To support this more extensive activity, the City has provided for public comment to be received on proposed changes to the plan.  What's a Comprehensive Plan?
bulletShip Harbor Being Sold for Residential Development           Learn More
There is a long history associated with Ship harbor and we have compiled Port meeting minutes and summarized them so that residents can determine for themselves how well this property has been managed by the Port.

The City is being asked to issue a Conditional Use Permit that would allow developers to create a residential development there, instead of supporting the " marine oriented and tourist activity" as defined by the Commercial Marine Zoning.

Additionally, Anacortes does not need to convert land intended for commercial purposes to residential, as we have enough residentially zoned property to meet GMA requirement to the year 2025.

bulletDo we re-zone SR 20 for new retail businesses?           Learn More
A group of property owners want to rezone a 7/10 mile section of industrial property along SR 20, to a zoning that would permit most uses, including retail.  If you live in Anacortes, you know we need additional retail.  But where we locate our new shopping could have significantly different results for our community.
bullet What kind of business does Anacortes need the most?       Learn More
This was the  Anacortes American's Question of the Week on June 22, 2005.  These were the answers of the six who were asked the question:
bulletAnother grocery store, shoe store, some place to buy clothes.  Not a Wal-Mart.
bulletA variety store that will sell practical things, like socks and underwear.
bulletSomething like Fred Meyer would be great because they have clothes and food.
bulletPossibly a department store.
bulletMore men's stores to get socks and underwear.
bulletOcean recreational business.  I went up & down the street looking for oysters.

Add one more piece of information; the first 5 people call Anacortes home, the last response came from a visitor from Napa Valley, CA.

What should this tell us?  We have two markets to serve, each with different needs!
